I feel the above numbered
superstitious cricket players provide us with enough amusement as to
how self belief is restored by doing something or the other peculiar
to those individuals. In countries like India and Pakistan, once
cricket fever catches up, even paracetamol becomes ineffective.
We all know that in a
sport, the best team wins who plays better in that day. Like the
cricket players, why should the hard core cricket fans shy away from
doing something funny igniting their passion for a win for their
country? Do you know that the great Indian film super start Amitabh
Bachchan does not watch live telecast of cricket matches for an
unfounded logic that his team may lose? Sachin Tendulkar’s family
had superstitions that whenever they see him playing live;
invariably Tendulkar will get out early. People do peculiar things
in course of a cricket match just for a win of their team. To cite a
few:
1) Prayers at home,
temples or Mosques.
2) Wearing dress of specific colours for the good luck.
3) Not changing sitting postures in tight situations.
4) Standing during the whole course of the match.
5) Pujas/Prasad is promised to the GOD on a win.
6) Fans prefer to locate their TV Set in a particular place
following VASTHU Sastra.
7) Not talking to each other when wickets fall.
Thus cricket
superstitions add to the flavor of the game. The game is enriched
with additives of superstitions. After all, we all like to have
entertainment out of it. Let the the game be funnier with more and
more superstitious cricketers.
Recently the Aussies have
started losing. Some say their one day form is because they changed
their traditional Yellow and green trim jerseys to green with gld
trim. Here are some other superstitions from Cricket:
Neil McKenzie, South African Cricketer used to tape his bat to the
ceiling. Also he needed to have all the toilet seats closed and
whilst his wife was
not allowed to watch the entire match unless she sat in the same
place throughout.
Cricketers
also have superstitions that cause them to wear the same pants or
shirts unwashed because they supposedly brought them luck! Not
shaving
and getting a hair cut are also some of the things that purportedly
would continue a dream run!
Then
there are all the kerchiefs that cricketers use: Ganguly and
Sehwag’s
headscarves, Lala Amarnath and his red kerchief to name a few.
Azharuddin used to have a taveez (religious thread with pendant
around
his neck) that was always visible when he used to bat.
As for numbers or numerology, that
is another area where cricketing superstition runs amok: Tendulkar
and
the number 10 at the back of his shirt, Ganguly and the many
consultations with the numerologist about changing the number on the
back of his shirt. And what about the Nelson (score at 111 runs) and
Umpire Shepherd doing his little jig to dispel bad luck!
