Superstitions
from Venezuela
In Latin America, people
usually have many beliefs. Each country has its own traditions,
customs, superstitions, and rituals; and on some occasions these
things are shared by people in different towns and even by people in
different continents. I am going to tell you about a few
superstitions that I believe are only for my country, but I am not
completely sure.
In Venezuela, we have
many tales about good or bad luck. Most of the time, these tales are
told by old people. For me, it is funny to be superstitious, trying
to avoid things that bring bad luck or trying to do things which
bring good luck.
For example, my
grandmother has told me many times that if someone passes a broom
over my feet, I will never get married. For that reason, you can see
many single women getting out of the way of people who are sweeping.
Another superstition is
that you can never give a packet of handkerchiefs as a present
because if you do, this can make the two people (the giver and the
receiver) have a fight.
Some people really
believe in these kinds of things, and it is the funniest thing is to
see them doing almost anything to get a little good luck.
